Reposted from Oakland North (Muna Danish):
For the elderly, staying active can be difficult. But that’s not the case at the Lincoln Square Recreation Center in Oakland’s Chinatown. The center has Asian-centric programs including Cantonese orchestra, tai chi, and Chinese calligraphy. With no other senior center in downtown Oakland, it has become a hub for seniors looking not just for exercise, but for community.
Lincoln Square also offers after-school and teen programming, and is open seven days a week. Director Gilbert Gong estimates over 2,000 people a day come through its doors. While the center is always busy, it’s also forty years old, and desperately in need of repairs. Last year, Golden State Warriors’ player Kevin Durant and local foundations renovated four basketball courts at the center. Now, Gong and the center’s volunteers are drafting up plans for an expansion.
